The early life is dedicated to growth and development. It is during this time, that the brain and body have the most capability to change, restore, recover, and improve if given the right conditions. So, when facing any developmental concerns, it is important to evaluate and address these concerns in a timely manner. The earlier the intervention, the faster and better the results will be. We at Open Play Therapy encourage families to find professional assistance as soon as they see the need. We know exactly how to help caregivers and families to find the best strategies for their childs' optimal development.
We understand that a clinic may be attractive for all the equipment and material they exhibit. However, it has been established for a while now that nowhere is a better place for physical, occupational and other therapies than the childs' natural environment of their home. At home (or other familiar places like daycare, school, and parks) the child is comfortable with the the people around, the furniture, the floors and other familiar surfaces, the lighting, etc, which inspire their best performance in therapy. The opposite tends to happen in a clinic, where other strange faces are around including other therapists working with other children, different walls, mats, bright lights, and noises, which are all distractions for small children and are often overwhelming for the child and may hinder their performance. Their performance is always better in the comfort of their homes and no other environment can compare.
Furthermore, the main goal of therapy is to assist patients to improve their quality of life and development in their natural environment. While the clinics have to always find ways to best mimic the natural environment of the home, daycare, or school, the sessions in the natural environment itself (therapy in the home) has already proven successful. For example, a good therapist in a clinic may want to teach the infant/toddler to get down from the bed independently but there are no beds in clinics, and even if they had one they'll never have the one in the home with the same height, same mattress, and bed frame. Another example are the toys and equipment in the clinic that families don't have at home, therefore the children and families cannot carry over the activity done in the clinic into their homes. We at Open Play Therapy focus on whatever is available in the home and use creative ways to transform the natural environment in a 24/7 "clinic".
We at Open Play Therapy take our name seriously, because we know that children will do anything as long as we entertain them with lots of fun time. Our goal is to provide therapy while they play because the best outcomes happen when they are happy. Thus, we avoid the crying and resisting, and never insist on any unwanted activity. It is common to see the child dictating and guiding the pace and the activities of our therapy sessions. They choose what to do and we just make it part of a game to include therapy without realization. This way the child gains confidence, they are always excited, and we gain their trust. In this regard, there are no traumatic experiences (like when a therapist forces an unwanted activity). They always want us back, and always welcome us with smiles on their faces when we arrive. Because they know it's open play time!
Our clientele are babies and children of all ages (0-18 yrs old) with any medical diagnosis or presenting any global developmental delay (speech delay, gross and/or fine motor delay). We also serve children presenting sensory integration and attention issues. Some common diagnosis we see includes cerebral palsy, ASD, muscle dystrophy, Down Syndrome, and other genetic abnormalities.
